Robert De Niro achter geplande vertoning anti-vaccinatie docu op Tribeca filmfestival

Een verklaring op de Facebook-pagina van het Tribeca filmfestival maakt duidelijk hoe het de terecht verguisde Andrew  Wakefield gelukt is om zijn anti-vaccinatiedocumentaire Vaxxed z’n première te laten beleven op dit prestigieuze festival [zie update]. Het is de schuld van filmacteur Robert De Niro, mede-oprichter van Tribeca. Hij laat weten:

Grace and I have a child with autism and we believe it is critical that all of the issues surrounding the causes of autism be openly discussed and examined. In the 15 years since the Tribeca Film Festival was founded, I have never asked for a film to be screened or gotten involved in the programming. However this is very personal to me and my family and I want there to be a discussion, which is why we will be screening VAXXED. I am not personally endorsing the film, nor am I anti-vaccination; I am only providing the opportunity for a conversation around the issue.

Waarom er nog sprake zou moeten zijn rondom de vraag of de BMR-vaccinaties iets met het voorkomen van autisme van doen heeft, verbaast iedereen die deze onverkwikkelijke toestand gevolgd heeft. Die is voor een belangrijk deel te wijten aan de frauduleuze praktijken van de voormalig dokter Wakefield, die niet voor niets zijn titel is kwijtgeraakt en nu dus via een documentaire propagandafilm zijn gelijk probeert te halen.

Er is veel commotie op blogs, krantenwebsites en social media over deze geplande vertoning van de propagandafilm van Wakefield. Twitteraar Joe Hanson corrigeerde voor Tribeca de biografie die ze voor Wakefield op hun site hadden staan:

Tribeca heeft inmiddels die inaccurate biografie van Wakefield van de site gehaald (vergelijk de versie van 26 maart met die van  24 maart). De vraag is wat er voor in de plaats komt.

Update 27/3/2016 0:03: soms kan het snel gaan, Tribeca heeft net laten weten dat ze er toch van af zien. Update op die Facebook mededeling:

UPDATE: 4/26/2016 Statement from Robert De Niro, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, regarding VAXXED at the Festival:

“My intent in screening this film was to provide an opportunity for conversation around an issue that is deeply personal to me and my family. But after reviewing it over the past few days with the Tribeca Film Festival team and others from the scientific community, we do not believe it contributes to or furthers the discussion I had hoped for.

The Festival doesn’t seek to avoid or shy away from controversy. However, we have concerns with certain things in this film that we feel prevent us from presenting it in the Festival program. We have decided to remove it from our schedule.”
