Deepak Chopra leeft in moeilijke tijden, iedereen met een beetje gezond verstand prikt zijn vage geklets snel door. De meesten halen hun schouders erover op, maar er zijn er ook bij die hem openlijk te kakken zetten: “We’re confronted with a strange mixture of bedfellows: an aging stage magician, an Oxford professor on the rampage against “the God delusion,” an astrophysicist, and a biology professor at the University of Chicago who sees himself as a gadfly against pseudoscience. Behind them marches a ragged band of atheists, scientists, blogosphere pests, mischievous troublemakers, and sincere doubters.” Geen wonder dat Chopra nu keihard terugslaat met een uitdaging.
Hij voelde blijkbaar de behoefte om het nog wat simpeler uit te leggen dan in zijn twee eerdere video’s (1,2). Dat is fijn, want die waren wel erg warrig. Misschien scheelt het ook al dat hij zich ditmaal extra netjes heeft aangekleed. Wie daagt hij nu precies uit? “Dear Randi, dear Dawkins, dear Daniel Dennett and everybody else in that tribe” spreekt hij de uitgedaagden aan. Die ‘tribe’ bestaat als we afgaan op de eerdere video’s uit ‘Randi and all his colleagues, his so called militant atheists friends and professional debunkers’. Blijkbaar veegt Chopra nogal wat mensen en in het bijzonder zijn critici, op één hoop van vervelende materialistische atheïstische denkers, die elk spiritueel gedachtegoed per definitie afwijzen. Beetje raar, want James Randi staat nu niet echt bekend om atheïstisch activisme en Daniel Dennett werd wel één van de ‘four horsemen of the non-apocalypse‘ genoemd, samen met Richard Dawkins, maar heeft een heel wat genuanceerdere pen dan die laatste (Chopra blijkt sowieso weinig van Dennett te begrijpen). Het is vooral Dawkins aan wie Chopra de grootste hekel lijkt te hebben, maar je moet natuurlijk wat meer mensen schofferen, anders is je aandachttrekkerij bij voorbaat kansloos.
Op zich is de vraag die hij voorlegt natuurlijk interessant, maar is er iemand die beweert daar het antwoord op te hebben? En leent het zich voor zo’n uitdaging? De vergelijking met de One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge van de James Randi Educational Foundation gaat niet op. Die daagt mensen uit om een concrete paranormale claim onder gecontroleerde omstandigheden te demonstreren (ook mis ik een reglement dat duidelijk maakt wanneer een ingediend stuk nu voldoet aan zijn uitdaging en natuurlijk een garantie dat het geld ook uitbetaald wordt, maar vooruit, je kunt niet op elke slak zout leggen).
Dat soort reacties kwam natuurlijk meteen uit vele kanten op Chopra’s videootjes, maar blijkens een stuk van hem op The Huffington Post(*) ziet hij de verschillen niet zo.
Since Randi’s reward has never been handed out, the overall effect seems unquestionable: Nothing beyond the grasp of the scientific, rational mind is real. The toxic side effect, however, has been to tar spirituality and hoaxes with the same brush. The educated public buys into this conclusion, and as a result, being on the side of the truth means that you dismiss faith, healing, alternative medicine, unexplained phenomena, and ancient wisdom while priding yourself that none of it needs examining, since science is the one true way. As a society for the suppression of curiosity, the skeptic movement has no qualms about attacking anyone they please with contempt and ridicule.
Heeft ie een punt? Volgens mij niet en gebruikt hij de JREF Challenge als een stroman. Die skeptische uitdaging gaat om concrete beweringen die waarneembare effecten hebben. Chopra gooit geloof en spiritualiteit zonder dat soort claims op één hoop met alternatieve gezondheidszorg, paranormale claims enzovoort, niet de JREF. Het is Chopra zelf die hier de teerkwast hanteert. En wat heeft zijn uitdaging in vredesnaam te maken met zijn onvrede over de houding van skeptici?
Let’s leave aside the whole question of God, faith, miracles, and the so-called supernatural. These things have been incendiary for a long time and arouse stubborn resistance on both sides. The real issue is exactly what my offer focuses on: What is consciousness, how does it create reality, and how far does this reality extend?
Compared to this issue, what the skeptics do, for good or ill, is not very significant. Who opposes the exposure of hoaxes? It’s sad that thousands of dedicated researchers and farseeing thinkers earn almost no public attention while noisy skeptics grab the limelight.
Tsja, dat komt er dus op neer dat als iemand zegt dat hij geen sluitende verklaring heeft voor het verschijnsel bewustzijn of een antwoord geeft, dat Chopra niet goed genoeg vindt, dat zo iemand niet mag roepen Chopra allerlei aantoonbare nonsens verkoopt. Oh, wacht, dat mag misschien nog wel, maar het mag dan niet teveel aandacht krijgen (‘noisy skeptics’ en ‘the limelight’). De aanhangers van Chopra zouden er misschien per ongeluk kennis van kunnen nemen en in verwarring gebracht kunnen worden. Nou ja, misschien wordt het wat duidelijker in het vervolg dat Chopra aankondigt, over waarom zijn uitdaging in feite gaat om het ter discussie stellen van het materialisme (*).

When I made a video offering a million dollars to anyone who could explain how the brain produces the appearance of the three-dimensional world, I didn’t have a publicity stunt in mind. I wanted to draw attention to consciousness research, which has been burgeoning. The public isn’t aware of how big a turn-around this represents. For a long time consciousness was taboo in the scientific community. The reason isn’t hard to fathom. To explore consciousness means delving into subjectivity, the personal inner world. Science deals in objectivity, data, and hard facts instead.
Chopra maakt het er niet beter op en doet nu net alsof er niet continu aandacht is voor het bewustzijn, zowel vanuit filosofische hoek, als vanuit de kant van de neurowetenschap. Nog steeds volstrekt onduidelijk waarom hij nu zijn skeptische belagers van zijn eigen onzin hiermee denkt te kunnen weerspreken.
The hard problem lies at the basis of my million dollar challenge to skeptics. That it is met with contemptuous ridicule by professional skeptics means very little — they do what they do, scurrilous and dishonest as it winds up being. The Amazing Randi’s million dollar paranormal challenge, suspended after ten years in 2010, is trumpeted as proof that the paranormal is a fraud. In fact, the conditions of the prize set up multiple hurdles and catches to insure that the money couldn’t be won. I insist that the whole project is a red herring, a distraction from the issues posed by consciousness.
