Will Storr schreef voor The Telegraph een artikel over homeopathie getiteld:

Little pill, big trouble
To some, it’s a life-saver. To others, it’s a con trick played on the sick and vulnerable. But what’s the truth about homeopathy?

Het artikel is zeer de moeite waard en ik raad je dan ook aan om het in zijn geheel te lezen [link].

Laat je vooral niet tegenhouden door het standaard verhaal waar het artikel mee begint – een ongeneeslijk zieke die beter wordt nadat ze homeopathie is gaan gebruiken.

Het verhaal gaat namelijk verder en de journalist spreekt met zowel voor- als tegenstanders van homeopathie. Van Michael “Marsh” Marshall, die we kennen als de organisator van de 10:23 actie waarbij ondergetekende samen met andere skeptici en leden van de Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij een overdosis homeopathische middelen namen, tot Dana Ullman, die de website: Homeopathic.com – “Homeopathic Educational Services“, runt.

Gelukkig komt hij uiteindelijk wat mij betreft tot de enige juiste conclusie, waarbij hij skeptici ook nog licht op de vingers tikt. Mocht je het verhaal zelf willen gaan lezen, doe dat dan nu. Anders kan je op de ‘spoiler’-knop klikken.

It took me a while to understand what I now hold to be the truth about homeopathy. I was in the thicket of Shang, trying to carefully understand everything Ullman was telling me, when I suddenly thought: if homeopathy worked, shouldn’t it be more obvious? If it really did have the power to cure a cancer as advanced as Gemma’s [de ongeneeslijk zieke – red.] then wouldn’t we see, in study after study, significant wins for the homeopaths? Science moves forward by consensus. Unlikely claims backed up by marginal results cannot and should not lead to a change in establishment opinions. And yet the sceptics are wrong when they say there’s “no evidence” for homeopathy. There is evidence. But there’s much better evidence that says it doesn’t work. For me, it seems clear that Gemma’s recovery is a mystery. But her story does show that, for us fallible humans, personal experience will always trump the dry analyses of science. Indeed, as Gemma walked me to her door at the end of that afternoon, I asked her one final question. If God sat you down and said, “homeopathy is nonsense”, would she believe him? She answered in an instant. “No.”
