Effe een sokalletje doen

6 February 2012 by Maarten Koller 6 Comments

——————————————————————————–

Cultural Narratives: Preconceptualist capitalism in the works of Gaiman

Anna Long
Department of Future Studies, Yale University

Francois A. H. Sargeant
Department of Sociology, Miskatonic University, Arkham, Mass.

1. Expressions of meaninglessness

“Reality is intrinsically used in the service of sexism,” says Sartre. The masculine/feminine distinction intrinsic to Gaiman’s Black Orchid emerges again in Death: The High Cost of Living.

In the works of Gaiman, a predominant concept is the distinction between within and without. Therefore, any number of deconstructions concerning the bridge between class and consciousness exist. The subject is interpolated into a material theory that includes truth as a reality.

It could be said that Foucault uses the term ‘preconceptualist capitalism’ to denote a postcultural totality. If patriarchial situationism holds, the works of Gaiman are empowering.

In a sense, many narratives concerning social realism may be found. The main theme of the works of Gaiman is not dematerialism per se, but predematerialism.

Therefore, the failure, and therefore the dialectic, of substructuralist capitalist theory depicted in Gaiman’s Death: The Time of Your Life is also evident in Neverwhere, although in a more mythopoetical sense. Cameron[1] suggests that we have to choose between social realism and the precultural paradigm of discourse.

But several discourses concerning the common ground between sexual identity and art exist. The characteristic theme of Brophy’s[2] analysis of deconstructivist socialism is the fatal flaw, and eventually the defining characteristic, of neodialectic class.

Etc etc.

1. Cameron, K. U. ed. (1989) Social realism in the works of Smith. University of Oregon Press
2. Brophy, Q. (1998) Contexts of Failure: Preconceptualist capitalism in the works of Eco. Harvard University Press

http://pdos.csail.mit.edu/scigen/  .
