Wat zou je denken als je opeens een flyer onder je ruitenwisser vindt, zogenaamd afkomstig van de gemeente, waarin gewaarschuwd wordt voor een aardbeving die over een paar maanden plaats zou vinden? Dat schijnt namelijk gebeurd te zijn in Ciampino nabij Rome begin dit jaar.
Bovenstaande valt te lezen in een bericht van Query, een website van de Italiaanse skeptische organisatie CICAP. De aanleiding tot de flyer (waarvan de gemeente alle betrokkenheid ontkent) was een voorspelling van amateur seismoloog Raffaele Bendandi die in de vorige eeuw een voorspelling deed: op 11 mei 2011 zou Rome getroffen worden door een zware aardbeving.
Bendandi bedacht dat aardbevingen kwamen door hemellichamen zoals de zon en de maan. Die zouden met hun zwaartekracht de plaattektoniek beïnvloeden en zo aardbevingen veroorzaken. Een achterhaalde theorie en daarmee de voorspelling dus ook.
Toch schijnen er mensen te zijn die de voorspelling serieus namen: volgens onderstaande nieuwsvideo zouden bedrijven voor deze datum vrij-aanvragen hebben ontvangen van 1 op de 5 werknemers (maar zonder informatie over wat normaal is voor zo’n dag zegt dat natuurlijk vrij weinig).

Het is inmiddels 13 mei en gelukkig is eergisteren niets speciaals gebeurd in Rome. Ik vraag me af of Bendandi zijn voorspelling zou hebben bijgesteld naarmate hij meer kennis over plaattektoniek had verzameld. Dat maakt het onderscheid tussen een pseudowetenschapper en een wetenschapper, de laatste stelt zijn ideeën bij wanneer er meer feiten boven water komen.

Edit 13-05-11, 10:21: Ik ben in bovenstaande tekst vergeten te vermelden dat volgens het Gemeentelijke Geofysisch Observatorium (vertaling?) Bendandi de bewuste datum nooit zou hebben genoemd:

Naar aanleiding van bovenstaand artikel nam ik contact op met Massimo Polidoro, mede-oprichter van CICAP, hieronder zijn antwoorden:

But the newspapers reported and 18% rise in requests for permissions from work on May 11. There is no way of knowing if this is just a coincidence or it is related to the fear of a earthquake. We did a live-blogging all day long from Rome, reporting on what was going on and, of course, there was nothing to report because there was no earthquake.
