Oorzaak opiumcirkels: stoned wallabies

In Australië wordt (legaal) opium verbouwd waarmee morfine en dergelijke wordt gemaakt. Grappig verschijnsel is dat ze daar last hebben van wallabies die de knoppen van de opiumplanten eten, stoned worden en in cirkels gaan springen.

Lara Giddings, de procureur-generaal van de eiland staat Tasmanië, rapporteerde in 2009 aan het parlement over de veiligheid rondom de opiumvelden:

“The one interesting bit that I found recently in one of my briefs on the poppy industry was that we have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles,” Lara Giddings told the hearing.

“Then they crash,” she added. “We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high.”

Misschien moeten we bij graancirkels ook eerst maar eens denken aan meer aardse zaken (zoals drugsgebruikende jongeren, of een grap), in plaats van buitenaardsen.
