Congresorganisatie accepteert flauwekulstuk – geschreven door iOS

Op 20 oktober 2016 kreeg Christoph Bartneck van de Universiteit van Canterbury in Nieuw Zeeland het verzoek om een paper in te dienen voor een conferentie over kernfysica. Bartneck schrijft op zijn blog dat hij weinig tot geen kennis heeft over kernfysica. Hij had dus geen zin om hierover een paper te schrijven. Maar hij had wel zin om de congresorganisatie te testen. Hij liet de autocomplete functie van iOS een paper schrijven (in zijn blogpost over zijn paper legt hij uit hoe dat in z’n werk gaat). iOS leverde, zoals mag worden verwacht, een nonsensikale tekst. De eerste zinnen van zijn paper met de titel ‘Atomic Energy will have been made available to a single source’ luiden:

‘Atomic Physics and I shall not have the same problem with a separate section for a very long long way. Bartneck deed er een plaatje uit de Wikipedia bij en stuurde zijn paper in. Die werd een paar uur later geaccepteerd. Bizar.

De congresorganisatie, Omics, is volgens de Wikipedia een organisator van ‘predatory meetings’. ‘Predatory conferences or predatory meetings are meetings set up to appear like legitimate scientific conferences but which are exploitative as they do not provide proper editorial control over presentations and advertising includes claims of involvement of prominent academics who are, in fact, uninvolved, aldus de Wikipedia. Omics doet volgens de Wikipedia ook aan ‘predatory open access publishing’. Ook in Nederland vind je Omics-congressen. Een voorbeeld is dit congres over alternatieve geneeswijzen in Schiphol.
