De Amerikaanse skepticus Michael Shermer behandelt in deze video 10 vragen waarmee je onzin kunt opsporen:

1. How reliable is the source of the claim?
2.Does the source make similar claims?
3. Have the claims been verified by somebody else?
4. Does this fit with the way the world works?
5. Has anyone tried to disprove the claim?
6. Where does the preponderance of evidence point?
7. Is the claimant playing by the rules of science?
8. Is the claimant providing positive evidence?
9. Does the new theory account for as many phenomena as the old theory?
10. Are personal beliefs driving the claim?

Bob’s humbug detection kit

We zijn er allemaal weleens geweest: het moment in de discussie waar je je klem gezet voelt en toch vrij zeker bent dat je gelijk hebt. Vooral in discussies met mensen over het meer tussen hemel en aarde is me dat al meerdere malen overkomen. Ergens deugt er iets niet, maar wat?

Volgende keer kom ik beter beslagen ten ijs met Bob’s humbug detection kit. In simpele termen legt Bob de basics uit van skepticisme, de wetenschappelijke methode, Occam’s razor en diverse drogredenen. Voor de liefhebbers is er ook nog Bob’s psychic humbug detection kit en voor de echte diehards is er de Hunting Humbug 101 podcast cursus met maar liefst 36 afleveringen. Knappe zweefneef die me nu nog tegen de vlakte kletst.

De auteur van de website, Bob Lewis, laat op zijn blog weten dat hij goochelaar en schrijver is.  Hij beschrijft zijn missie als volgt:

‘Humbug is all around us. It comes from the media, politicians, businessmen, frauds and quacks, and people just like you and me. Anyone with an agenda or a desire to make a quick buck may be tempted to use humbug to further their own goals. Others may be honestly mistaken or self deluded. […] To some extent, you can rely on people like myself, Penn & Teller, James Randi, Richard Dawkins, and many others […]. However, there’s just too much of it. There’s no way you’re ever going to be able to completely rely on any such source or sources to give you all the information on all the humbug that’s out there […] . So it’s important that you’re able to detect humbug for yourself’.
