Een recent artikel in het blad ‘Personality and Individual Differences’ concludeert dat ‘geloof in technisch-wetenschappelijke vooruitgang’ vaker gelukkig/tevreden maakt dan religie. Samengevat: ‘The results showed that belief in scientific–technological progress is a stronger predictor of life satisfaction than religious beliefs in a nationally representative sample of the Dutch population … and across 69 out of 72 countries’. In slechts in 28 van de 72 onderzochte landen was een positieve samenhang te vinden tussen religieuze overtuigingen en ‘life satisfaction’.
In Nederland vonden de onderzoekers dat zowel religie als geloof in technisch-wetenschappelijke vooruitgang samenhangen met ‘life satisfaction’. Volgens de website van de Universiteit van Californië in Berkeley: ‘The researchers first surveyed individuals in the Netherlands about this belief and about their Western religious faith, measured by how often they attended religious services, and whether they identified as religious and believed in God. They found that people who more strongly believed in scientific-technological progress or religion were more satisfied with their lives—but the link was significantly stronger among those who had faith [in] the former’.
Wat zit daar achter? ‘Additional analyses highlighted the role of personal control beliefs as the mechanism driving this effect: a strong belief in scientific–technological progress was associated with an enhanced sense of personal control, which in turn contributed to higher life satisfaction’ aldus de onderzoekers.
Is geloof in wetenschap nu beter dan religie? Interessant genoeg kunnen beide goed samengaan vonden de onderzoekers. Religie kan op andere manieren bijdragen aan tevredenheid, dat wordt in het stukje op de website van Berkeley uitgelegd. Ook is opvallend dat je omgeving een rol lijkt te spelen: de bijdrage van één van de twee overtuigingen was het grootst in een omgeving waar veel anderen die overtuiging delen.
