De desillusionist

De krant New York Times zet in een lang artikel leven en werk van de skepticus James Randi op de rij. De NRC vat het NYT-artikel samen. Randi vertelt onder andere over de vele mensen die geprobeerd hebben om de miljoen dollar te claimen die hij heeft uitgeloofd aan wie paranormale gaven kan aantonen. Niemand heeft het bedrag tot nu toe opgehaald.

Heeft Randi’s strijd zin? Vaak blijven mensen geloven in hun gaven nadat ze zijn gezakt voor de ‘one million dollar challenge’: “They’re always rationalizing,” Randi told me as we walked to dinner at the casino steakhouse. “There are always reasons prevailing why they can’t do it. They call it the resilience of the duped. It’s with intense regret that you watch them go down the tubes.” 

En ook anderen blijven geloven. Zo vertelt Uri Geller over zijn ervaring nadat hij door Randi was ontmaskerd: ‘I was about to pack up the next day and go back to Tel Aviv. I thought, That’s it — I’m destroyed.” But to Geller’s astonishment, he was immediately booked on “The Merv Griffin Show.” He was on his way to becoming a paranormal superstar. “That Johnny Carson show made Uri Geller,” Geller said. To an enthusiastically trusting public, his failure only made his gifts seem more real: If he were performing magic tricks, they would surely work every time’. GJvtL.
