Simon Singh vs chiropractors

In het allereerste bericht hier op Kloptdatwel schreef ik over Simon Singh, die op het symposium van de Vereniging tegen de Kwakzalverij sprak over (onder andere) zijn problemen in Engeland waar hij aangeklaagd werd wegens smaad. Hij schreef namelijk dat de Britse chiropractors zonder enig bewijs ‘bogus’ behandelingen promoten. In plaats van met bewijs te komen ga je dan dus (aan)klagen.

Onderstaande samenvatting komt van de website Libelreform.org, een website die het herzien van de smaad-wetten in Engeland promoot.

Simon Singh, the best-selling author of Fermat’s Last Theorem and The Code Book, published an article in the Guardian in April 2008 in which he discussed chiropractic treatment with reference to the British Chiropractic Association.

In a passage describing the BCA’s claims about the treatment of a number of childhood ailments, Singh wrote that ‘even though there is not a jot of evidence’ the BCA ‘happily promotes bogus treatments’.

Despite the article being published in the Guardian, Singh was sued personally. Mr Justice Eady decided on the issue of meaning in May 2009, and found that Singh’s comments were statements of fact, rather than expressions of opinion, which implied that the BCA was being deliberately dishonest. It was a meaning that Singh has said he never intended. Eady refused to grant leave to appeal, although permission was granted by the Court of Appeal itself in October 2009.

As a result of this case, the charity Sense About Science launched a petition for libel reform. Richard Dawkins has said that if Singh loses, it would have ‘major implications on the freedom of scientists, researchers and other commentators to engage in robust criticism of scientific, and pseudoscientific, work’.

But what exactly is a reputation, how much is one worth and is it just the rich and famous that get to fight over them?

In this week’s episode we follow science writer Simon Singh and his court battle with the British Chiropractic Association and family man Tristan Rogers who finds himself in hot water, having to defend comments he posted on an online property forum.

Marjoe – achter de schermen bij een gebedsgenezer

Afgelopen dinsdag schreef ik over het nieuwste programma van Derren Brown waarin hij gebedsgenezers onder de loep neemt. Omdat de uitzending op de Engelse zender Channel Four was, konden veel mensen het programma helaas niet volgen. De onderstaande documentaire gaat over hetzelfde onderwerp.

Dit is het verhaal van kind-predikant Marjoe, die na jaren een filmcrew uitnodigt met zijn laatste tour mee te gaan om een echt behind-the-scenes perspectief te krijgen. De New York Times schreef in 1972:

(…) Marjoe’s rather cool explanations of how he operates to excite the crowds and milk them of funds (…)

Marjoe talks at length about his career, about how his mother used to hold his head under a faucet if he forgot his lines, about his always being aware that he wasn’t “a miracle child,” about his lack of belief and wish to make a clean break.

Wat kun je verwachten? Scènes waarin Marjoe de cameraploeg instrueert hoe ze zich moeten gedragen (niet roken, geen lang haar) om niet door de mand te vallen, ze zijn immers een docu aan het maken over Marjoe die laat zien hoe de geldmachine werkt, en het zou niet handig zijn als dat opvalt of als mensen vragen gaan stellen. Verwacht scènes waarin waar Marjoe als een typische over-the-top tv-priester tekeer gaat met halleluja’s hier, en ‘praise the lord’s daar. Waarin Marjoe de cameraploeg voordoet hoe je in tongen praat. En scènes waarin Marjoe een grote zak met vers afgetroggeld geld leeggooit op bed: “Thank you Jesus!”.

Alle stereotypen blijken waar te zijn, in elk geval in het verhaal van Marjoe.

Griepprik onterecht beschuldigd van veroorzaken dystonie

Je was misschien net zo geschokt als ik toen je in 2009 de reportage zag over Desiree Jennings, de cheerleader die na een griepprik de neurologische aandoening dystonie kreeg. Volgens Jennings kreeg ze 10 dagen na de prik opeens last van spiertrekkingen en kon ze niet meer normaal praten en lopen. Tenminste, tenzij ze achteruit liep of vooruit rende, dan herstelde alles zich weer miraculeus.

“Wat ontzettend erg en eng”, dacht ik nog, en volgens het nieuwsbericht zou dit mogelijk eens op zoveel miljoen voorkomen. Ik vond het gek dat ik er nooit eerder over had gehoord, “maar blijkbaar kan het”, dacht ik onkritisch. Ik weet nu eenmaal niets van spierziekten en op dat moment dacht ik er niet verder over na.

Ik had natuurlijk beter moeten weten.

Ik was niet de enige die er verder niet al te veel over nadacht want hier brengt Fox nog een reportage over een 8 mijl hardloopwedstrijd die Jennings vervolgens liep, “bringing awareness to her illness”.

Alleen wat Jennings had, werd helemaal niet veroorzaakt door de griepprik. Sterker nog, ze had ook geen dystonie maar juist een psychische aandoening. Dr. Stephen Grill legt het uit:

Jennings verhaal werd opgepikt door Generation Rescue, een organisatie met de slogan ‘autisme is omkeerbaar’ die is opgericht door antivaccinatie kopstukken Jenny McArthy en Jim Carrey. Generation Rescue bracht Jennings in contact met Dr. Rashid Buttar. Een osteopaat die al eens beschuldigd is van onprofessioneel gedrag,  oplichting van kankerpatiënten en iets te enthousiast zijn met de diagnose kwikvergiftiging, diagnosticeerde Jennings met o.a. kwikvergiftiging.

Hieronder een interview met Buttar:

“She was actually seizing, having a seizure probably every forty-five to sixty seconds. (…) She was having periods of anoxia where she stopped breathing anywhere from fifteen to thirty seconds. Her progression of her pathology was so unbelievable. They had to carry her in, (…)  That was Monday morning. By noon we had her stable to the point that she was able to breathe without going into a seizure…

“She came in this morning she felt better, looked better, but still unable to talk. We continued with our treatments, and I told her once we got ready to hang the DMPS and the EDTA and some of the other, the MTEs that are certain IVs that we do, I told her that now the magic should start, prepared her for what I expected to happen…

“It’s not just chelation [verwijderen van zware metalen] but chelation was definitely a part of it … we had to the first day stabilize her because she was in a hyper-responsive mode and so we had to stabilize her. We gave her a couple of different IVs to stimulate the lymphatics to help build her nutritional status up because I knew that she hasn’t been eating. I couldn’t even do an exam on her without her having seizures so, we basically prepped her, we got her ready we got her stable, and then the second day was more aggressive treatment, where we were hitting her for natural forms of antivirals in IVs – you know which one I’m talking about that’s one of them – and then on top of that there was a couple of other things including the chelators, we gave her two different chelators, and then IV antioxidants. … The best I could have hoped for yesterday, she did 20% more than that. Today, my gut told me that by Wednesday this woman will be back. I was wrong, it happened today…

“You can see the incredible progression, this woman was in such severe respiratory stridor, her bronchioles were going into spasms because of the toxicity from, part of it could be the attenuated virus, certainly some of it was the mercury, but her whole system was starting to shut down. (…) I told the president of Generation Rescue that if he hadn’t gotten her to me when he did…

“Anybody who says that this woman was dealing with a psychogenic issue, it was in her head, they are– we don’t even have to address it because they’re just going to embarrass themselves. Because when you see the video of her when she came in, when she was seizing, when she couldn’t breathe, when she was going through fifteen to thirty second lapses of– physically incapable of ventilating, anybody who says that, they will be literally laughed at. (…)”

Neuroloog Steve Novella, bekend van sciencebasedmedicine.org en als host van de (uitstekende) podcast The Skeptic’s Guide to the Galaxy schreef echter het volgende:

“If Jennings really had dystonia or any biological brain injury from toxicity, removing the toxin might prevent further progression and allow the slow process of recovery to begin. But brain damage does not immediately reverse itself once the cause is removed. It is possible for dystonia to be a side effect of certain medications, and it can immediately resolve once that medication is stopped or reversed. But in that situation we are dealing with an effect of an active blood level of a pharmaceutical agent – something which is inherently reversible. We are not dealing with damage or injury.

Further, it is highly implausible that Jennings (even if she received the highest dose of thimerosal from the flu vaccine – 25 micrograms) had any mercury left in her system from the vaccine she received in August. Mercury from vaccines is removed naturally within days, and would not be hanging around in significant amounts two months later.

However, now Jennings herself, and Dr. Buttar, report that Jennings began to improve while still sitting in the chair and receiving her chelation therapy, and within 36 hours her symptoms were completely gone. First, let me say that I am very happy Ms. Jennings’ symptoms have resolved. Hopefully now she can just go on with her life. But to me, this impossibly rapid recovery is a dramatic confirmation that her symptoms were psychogenic to begin with. It is simply implausible that brain injury from mercury toxicity could be reversed so quickly – especially when you consider that Dr. Buttar had Jennings at death’s door.

The whole affair has now come full circle. To scientists and skeptics, this is an unfortunate story of a young woman with a psychogenic illness who unfortunately was exploited by some headline grabbing media and the anti-vaccine movement. To the anti-vaccinationists and the right-wing conspiracy health-freedom nuts, this is yet another story of an injury at the hands of evil vaccines, and all attempts to figure out what was really happening here are just lame attempts by the medical establishment to cover their behinds.”

Jennings werd door de reporter uit het eerste filmpje nog eens bezocht:

Ik ben in elk geval weer gerustgesteld en heb onlangs nog met een gerust hart enkele inentingen gehaald. Maar ik had in de eerste instantie natuurlijk eerst even wat dieper moeten graven voordat ik mezelf ongerust maakte.

Zussen drama door mind-control (of demonen, of…)

Ruwe samenvatting: twee Zweedse zusjes gaan met de bus richting London en gedragen zich verdacht. De buschauffeur wil ze niet meer verder meenemen en ze besluiten te gaan lopen. Tussen de vangrails van een snelweg. Verkeerscontrole camera pikt dit op en politie wordt gestuurd om ze daar weg te halen. Als die aankomen rennen ze beide de snelweg op met de langsrazende auto’s. Een aanrijding is het gevolg. Ze worden naar de kant van de weg gehaald (vluchtstrook) en lijken ongedeerd. Ondertussen arriveert meer politie met filmcrew. Opeens rent een van de zusjes de snelweg weer op. Flinke aanrijding. Enkele seconden later volgt de andere zus. Tweede flinke aanrijding. De ene roept een aantal paranoïde zaken zoals “ik herken je, je bent niet echt” en “ze willen je organen stelen!” terwijl politie probeert haar te helpen en met een dekentje te bedekken. Haar onderlichaam is nogal gewond maar dat lijkt haar niets te doen. De ander staat op terwijl politie haar probeert tegen te houden. Ze mept de agent neer, klimt over de vangrails en rent opnieuw het tegemoet komende verkeer in. Agenten overmeesteren haar met hulp van omstanders en kunnen haar amper in bedwang houden.

Zus 1 gaat het ziekenhuis in, bij een test worden geen drugs of alcohol in haar bloed gevonden. Zus 2 gaat ook het ziekenhuis in, haar verwondingen zijn niet erg zwaar en ze mag al snel weer naar huis maar wordt vanwege het neerslaan van de agent meteen ingerekend. Tijdens het politie bezoek doet ze vrij normaal. Ze wordt veroordeeld tot een dag cel, maar die heeft ze al in voorarrest uitgezeten dus ze mag naar huis.

Twee vrienden lopen naar huis, de vrijgelaten zus spreekt hen op straat aan. Ze is opzoek naar een bed & breakfast. Ze is ook nog eens haar zus kwijt. De mannen vinden haar wat verward en willen haar helpen.  Ze gaat met een van de mannen mee naar huis en een dag later probeert hij haar zus te lokaliseren. Ze steekt hem op een gegeven moment neer en rent weg terwijl ze over straat rent en zichzelf met een hamer tegen het hoofd slaat. Een hulpdienst probeert haar te helpen en weer vlucht ze weg. Ditmaal springt ze van een brug af en breekt haar enkels. Wederom ingerekend zien twee verschillende psychiaters haar en concluderen een geestesziekte.

Heeft God een toekomst?

Sam Harris & Michael Shermer discussiëren in de onderstaande video met Deepak Chopra & Jean Houston over het onderwerp “heeft God een toekomst?”.

Sam Harris, schrijver van o.a. The End of Faith (Nederlandse vertaling: Van God los), spreekt erg prettig, met logica en kennis van zaken.
Michael Shermer, oprichter van The Skeptics Society, doet zo ongeveer hetzelfde hoewel ik vind dat hij weinig nieuwe dingen zegt.

Deepak Chopra, een als endocrinoloog opgeleide arts die zich heeft gespecialiseerd in alternatieve therapieën waaronder ayurveda en geen onbekende op de bank bij Oprah, wordt door Shermer met enige regelmaat beschuldigd van “woo woo”-uitspraken. Met opmerkingen als “consciousness is a superposition of possibilities” kan ik Shermer daar geen ongelijk in geven.
Jean Houston is een auteur van verschillende boeken met titels als Life Force: The Psycho-Historical Recovery of the Self (1980); The Possible Human: A Course in Extending Your Physical, Mental, and Creative Abilities et cetera. Ik had haar tot nu nog nooit horen spreken en dat hoop ik voortaan zo te houden. Er valt geen touw aan vast te knopen aan wat zij zegt. Onder de Youtube video’s zijn de hoogstgewaardeerde reacties bijna iedere keer opmerkingen over Jean:

Here’s a great bullshit test: If you hear something someone says, and then you’re able to repeat it in your own words, it is probably not bullshit. It may be wrong, but at least it’s coherent. However, if you hear something and then you can’t even begin to formulate your own sentence to repeat the idea, then it is probably bullshit. When I hear Harris and Shermer, I can repeat the ideas. When I hear Chopra and the woman, I can’t.
