Uit de lezing van Kernan Coleman

Kernan Coleman, creative director van Ranch 7 legt in deze ignite lezing (5 minuten) uit waarom hij het magische denken heeft afgezworen en kritisch denker / skepticus is geworden. De lezing is humoristisch en met de zelfspot waar Amerikanen zo goed in zijn. Hij begint de lezing met:

‘The word skeptic is often confused with the word cynic or asshole’

Maar hij legt dan uit dat dat niet noodzakelijk waar is. Skepticisme staat gelijk aan kritisch denken. Kritisch denken voorkomt dat je in de luren wordt gelegd, en gelukkig:

‘Contrary to popular belief you can still love kittens’.

Daarna legt legt Coleman in hoog tempo een aantal basisuitgangspunten voor kritisch denken uit. Die licht hij toe met persoonlijke voorbeelden. Hij begint met een citaat van Richard Feynman:

‘The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool’

The Mad Revisionist – een website ontstaan uit bewondering van de methoden die Holocaust-ontkenners gebruiken om de historische waarheid te ontdekken. Het enige falen van de holocaust-ontkenners volgens the Mad Revisionist: het niet toepassen van hun logica op andere gebieden. The Mad Revisionist gaat door waar Holocaust-ontkenners zijn opgehouden en ontkent vrolijk de maan.

Als de maan nep is, hadden ze hem dan niet in leuke kleurtjes kunnen maken in plaats van saai grijs?

You can see it. But think about it – without the help of so-called “experts”, how do you really know what you’re looking at? It could be a hologram, projected from various government installations throughout the world. It could be a large, crudely painted balloon, held in place by helium and propelled by tiny sails and rudders (which is why it moves across the sky so slowly).

They ingeniously concocted the idea of “cycles of the moon”, and as their resources increased, were able to create the illusion that this object in the sky actually went through such changes. To make their hoax more plausible to early, superstitious societies, they arranged for these cycles to coincide with the months of the year.

But don’t all qualified scientists and astronomers agree that there is a moon? Indeed, but shouldn’t one be suspicious of such unanimity, when universities are supposed to be forums for open debate of controversial issues. (…) You will never see the revisionist perspective on the moon being taught in institutions of higher learning, even as a controversial opposing view. (…)  Could you imagine a student who argued the revisionist viewpoint on the question of the moon being awarded a degree? He would be hounded out of the university in an instant! How can one explain such behavior from institutions that are supposed to serve as forums for the free exchange of ideas, except to conclude that the establishment has something to hide?

But don’t the astronauts who claim to have walked on the moon count as eyewitnesses? And just how much money did each of these men receive, on record, for their services? And this doesn’t count the unaccounted millions that have probably bought their continued silence since.

And what about the “moon rocks” that these astronauts brought back with them? I’m sure their backyard gardens are just that much poorer. It will take more than a few phony space artifacts to prove the existence of a 74,000,000,000,000,000,000 ton object orbiting the earth.

Hasn’t the moon been mentioned in texts and literature throughout history? There is no mention of the moon in the English language prior to the year 1066. This is a proven fact, so rarely spoken of in these controlled academic institutions.

En zo gaat het nog wel even door.

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat The Mad Revisionist een humoristische site is. Maar de manier van argumenteren zal voor velen herkenbaar zijn. Het is de manier van veel complottheoretici.

Wanneer iemand met een bewijs voor je neus staat, zeg je dat het gefabriceerd is.

Wanneer een expert een uitspraak doet zeg je dat diegene geld heeft ontvangen om die uitspraak te doen.

Wanneer ‘iedereen’ een bepaalde (andere) mening heeft zeg je dat “zij er allemaal bij horen”.

Op die manier kan een complottheorist altijd in het complot blijven geloven: ontkrachtende bewijzen behoren ook tot het complot.

Helderzienden welkom bij Google

Afgelopen vrijdag liet Google weten dat ze op zoek zijn naar auto-completers: mensen die razendsnel kunnen typen en jouw zoekterm aanvullen terwijl je nog aan je eerste woord bezig bent.

In de video zie je Michael Taylor die bij Google gestart is als een spellingscontroleur. Iedere keer wanneer je een zoekopdracht voltooide en er kwam te staan “Bedoelde u…” dan was hij dat. Tegenwoordig vult hij als auto-completer zoekwoorden al aan terwijl mensen hun eerste zoekterm nog aan het typen zijn.

Michael geeft aan dat veel mensen denken dat je een of andere “PhD, computer science, techno-, math magician” moet zijn om bij Google te werken. Maar dat is niet altijd het geval, soms hebben ze ook gewoon mensen nodig die echt heel snel kunnen typen. En helderziend zijn.

Hieronder nog even de eisen:

  • Excellent knowledge of English and at least one other language.
  • Excellent knowledge of grammatical rules (e.g. parts of speech, parsing).
  • Understanding of the search engine space.
  • Proven web search experience.
  • Good typing skills (at least 32,000 WPM).
  • Willingness to travel (in order to provide local autocompletions) or relocate to obscure places like Nauru and Tuvalu to develop knowledge of local news and trends.
  • Certificate in psychic reading strongly preferred: palm, tarot, hypnosis, astrology, numerology, runes and/or auras.

Jammer dat het een 1-aprilgrap betrof. Ik had de door Google op te zetten testen om te zien of iemand echt helderziend is wel willen meemaken.

Zie jij het meisje linksom draaien of rechtsom? Internet-advertenties suggereren dat dit iets zegt over de dominantie van je hersenhelft. Als je het meisje naar rechts ziet draaien, zou je vooral je rechterhersenhelft gebruiken, of je linkerhelft als je het plaatje de andere kant op ziet bewegen.

Zo zit het echter niet in elkaar.

Steven Novella, klinisch neuroloog aan de Yale University School of Medicine en auteur van het uitstekende neurologica blog, legt in twee artikelen uit dat de waargenomen draairichting niets zegt over hoe je je hersenhelften gebruikt (klik hier voor een artikel uit 2007 en hier voor een recent artikel). Novella legt uit dat iedereen de hersenhelften door elkaar heen gebruikt en dat het plaatje een optische illusie is. De hersenen proberen een plat, tweedimensionaal plaatje te interpreteren als een draaiende beweging in drie dimensies:

“The spinning girl is a form of the more general spinning silhouette illusion. The image is not objectively “spinning” in one direction or the other. It is a two-dimensional image that is simply shifting back and forth. But our brains did not evolve to interpret two-dimensional representations of the world but the actual three-dimensional world. So our visual processing assumes we are looking at a 3-D image and is uses clues to interpret it as such. Or, without adequate clues it may just arbitrarily decide a best fit – spinning clockwise or counterclockwise. And once this fit is chosen, the illusion is complete – we see a 3-D spinning image”.

Psychologie Magazine legt het als volgt uit:

“Steven Novella, klinisch neuroloog aan de Yale University School of Medicine, stelt dat het verhaal over de dominante linker- en rechterhersenhelft onzin is. Volgens hem onthult het beeld van de dansende ballerina wel hoe het brein visuele informatie verwerkt. Het brein hanteert bepaalde aannames bij de verwerking van visuele beelden om zo orde en betekenis aan de wereld te geven. Ons visuele verwerkingssysteem neemt bijvoorbeeld aan dat we kijken naar een driedimensionaal beeld; de echte wereld is immers driedimensionaal. De danseres is een tweedimensionaal beeld, dat door ons brein wordt verwerkt als driedimensionaal, draaiend beeld”.

In het recente artikel vraagt Novella zich af waarom de meeste mensen het meisje rechtsom zien draaien. Hij verwijst naar een artikel van twee psychologie-hoogleraren die uitleggen dat dit veroorzaakt wordt doordat het visuele systeem van de hersenen een voorkeur heeft om te kiezen voor een standpunt waarbij we iets van bovenaf lijken te bekijken. Ze leggen uit dat het plaatje bedoeld is om de hersenen in verwarring te brengen – het bevat tegenstrijdige aanwijzingen. De schijnbare richting van de uitgestrekte hand suggereert onze hersenen dat we vrijwel op gelijke hoogte naar het figuurtje kijken. Onze hersenen denken dan al snel dat rechtsom de correcte draairichting is. De schaduw onder het plaatje suggereert juist dat we van bovenaf naar het draaiende meisje kijken. En dat suggereert een draaiende beweging de andere kant op:

“Tracing the end of the outstretched hand shows that the camera elevation with respect to the hand is only 6.0 deg, which is a little less than the value for the foot. That means that the figure was rendered with a perspective camera positioned about 75 meters away from the figure (assuming a vertical distance of 1m between foot and hand). According to this perspective cue, the view from above and therefore the clockwise rotation is the ‘true’ rotation. However, another cue to the rotation of the figure is provided by the shadow the feet cast on the ground. The ellipse circumscribed by the shadow of the outstretched foot—at least assuming that the ground is horizontal and that we are looking at it from above—clearly suggests counter-clockwise rotation”.
