Uit de lezing van Kernan Coleman

Kernan Coleman, creative director van Ranch 7 legt in deze ignite lezing (5 minuten) uit waarom hij het magische denken heeft afgezworen en kritisch denker / skepticus is geworden. De lezing is humoristisch en met de zelfspot waar Amerikanen zo goed in zijn. Hij begint de lezing met:

‘The word skeptic is often confused with the word cynic or asshole’

Maar hij legt dan uit dat dat niet noodzakelijk waar is. Skepticisme staat gelijk aan kritisch denken. Kritisch denken voorkomt dat je in de luren wordt gelegd, en gelukkig:

‘Contrary to popular belief you can still love kittens’.

Daarna legt legt Coleman in hoog tempo een aantal basisuitgangspunten voor kritisch denken uit. Die licht hij toe met persoonlijke voorbeelden. Hij begint met een citaat van Richard Feynman:

‘The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool’

Griepprik onterecht beschuldigd van veroorzaken dystonie

Je was misschien net zo geschokt als ik toen je in 2009 de reportage zag over Desiree Jennings, de cheerleader die na een griepprik de neurologische aandoening dystonie kreeg. Volgens Jennings kreeg ze 10 dagen na de prik opeens last van spiertrekkingen en kon ze niet meer normaal praten en lopen. Tenminste, tenzij ze achteruit liep of vooruit rende, dan herstelde alles zich weer miraculeus.

“Wat ontzettend erg en eng”, dacht ik nog, en volgens het nieuwsbericht zou dit mogelijk eens op zoveel miljoen voorkomen. Ik vond het gek dat ik er nooit eerder over had gehoord, “maar blijkbaar kan het”, dacht ik onkritisch. Ik weet nu eenmaal niets van spierziekten en op dat moment dacht ik er niet verder over na.

Ik had natuurlijk beter moeten weten.

Ik was niet de enige die er verder niet al te veel over nadacht want hier brengt Fox nog een reportage over een 8 mijl hardloopwedstrijd die Jennings vervolgens liep, “bringing awareness to her illness”.

Alleen wat Jennings had, werd helemaal niet veroorzaakt door de griepprik. Sterker nog, ze had ook geen dystonie maar juist een psychische aandoening. Dr. Stephen Grill legt het uit:

Jennings verhaal werd opgepikt door Generation Rescue, een organisatie met de slogan ‘autisme is omkeerbaar’ die is opgericht door antivaccinatie kopstukken Jenny McArthy en Jim Carrey. Generation Rescue bracht Jennings in contact met Dr. Rashid Buttar. Een osteopaat die al eens beschuldigd is van onprofessioneel gedrag,  oplichting van kankerpatiënten en iets te enthousiast zijn met de diagnose kwikvergiftiging, diagnosticeerde Jennings met o.a. kwikvergiftiging.

Hieronder een interview met Buttar:

“She was actually seizing, having a seizure probably every forty-five to sixty seconds. (…) She was having periods of anoxia where she stopped breathing anywhere from fifteen to thirty seconds. Her progression of her pathology was so unbelievable. They had to carry her in, (…)  That was Monday morning. By noon we had her stable to the point that she was able to breathe without going into a seizure…

“She came in this morning she felt better, looked better, but still unable to talk. We continued with our treatments, and I told her once we got ready to hang the DMPS and the EDTA and some of the other, the MTEs that are certain IVs that we do, I told her that now the magic should start, prepared her for what I expected to happen…

“It’s not just chelation [verwijderen van zware metalen] but chelation was definitely a part of it … we had to the first day stabilize her because she was in a hyper-responsive mode and so we had to stabilize her. We gave her a couple of different IVs to stimulate the lymphatics to help build her nutritional status up because I knew that she hasn’t been eating. I couldn’t even do an exam on her without her having seizures so, we basically prepped her, we got her ready we got her stable, and then the second day was more aggressive treatment, where we were hitting her for natural forms of antivirals in IVs – you know which one I’m talking about that’s one of them – and then on top of that there was a couple of other things including the chelators, we gave her two different chelators, and then IV antioxidants. … The best I could have hoped for yesterday, she did 20% more than that. Today, my gut told me that by Wednesday this woman will be back. I was wrong, it happened today…

“You can see the incredible progression, this woman was in such severe respiratory stridor, her bronchioles were going into spasms because of the toxicity from, part of it could be the attenuated virus, certainly some of it was the mercury, but her whole system was starting to shut down. (…) I told the president of Generation Rescue that if he hadn’t gotten her to me when he did…

“Anybody who says that this woman was dealing with a psychogenic issue, it was in her head, they are– we don’t even have to address it because they’re just going to embarrass themselves. Because when you see the video of her when she came in, when she was seizing, when she couldn’t breathe, when she was going through fifteen to thirty second lapses of– physically incapable of ventilating, anybody who says that, they will be literally laughed at. (…)”

Neuroloog Steve Novella, bekend van sciencebasedmedicine.org en als host van de (uitstekende) podcast The Skeptic’s Guide to the Galaxy schreef echter het volgende:

“If Jennings really had dystonia or any biological brain injury from toxicity, removing the toxin might prevent further progression and allow the slow process of recovery to begin. But brain damage does not immediately reverse itself once the cause is removed. It is possible for dystonia to be a side effect of certain medications, and it can immediately resolve once that medication is stopped or reversed. But in that situation we are dealing with an effect of an active blood level of a pharmaceutical agent – something which is inherently reversible. We are not dealing with damage or injury.

Further, it is highly implausible that Jennings (even if she received the highest dose of thimerosal from the flu vaccine – 25 micrograms) had any mercury left in her system from the vaccine she received in August. Mercury from vaccines is removed naturally within days, and would not be hanging around in significant amounts two months later.

However, now Jennings herself, and Dr. Buttar, report that Jennings began to improve while still sitting in the chair and receiving her chelation therapy, and within 36 hours her symptoms were completely gone. First, let me say that I am very happy Ms. Jennings’ symptoms have resolved. Hopefully now she can just go on with her life. But to me, this impossibly rapid recovery is a dramatic confirmation that her symptoms were psychogenic to begin with. It is simply implausible that brain injury from mercury toxicity could be reversed so quickly – especially when you consider that Dr. Buttar had Jennings at death’s door.

The whole affair has now come full circle. To scientists and skeptics, this is an unfortunate story of a young woman with a psychogenic illness who unfortunately was exploited by some headline grabbing media and the anti-vaccine movement. To the anti-vaccinationists and the right-wing conspiracy health-freedom nuts, this is yet another story of an injury at the hands of evil vaccines, and all attempts to figure out what was really happening here are just lame attempts by the medical establishment to cover their behinds.”

Jennings werd door de reporter uit het eerste filmpje nog eens bezocht:

Ik ben in elk geval weer gerustgesteld en heb onlangs nog met een gerust hart enkele inentingen gehaald. Maar ik had in de eerste instantie natuurlijk eerst even wat dieper moeten graven voordat ik mezelf ongerust maakte.

The Mad Revisionist – een website ontstaan uit bewondering van de methoden die Holocaust-ontkenners gebruiken om de historische waarheid te ontdekken. Het enige falen van de holocaust-ontkenners volgens the Mad Revisionist: het niet toepassen van hun logica op andere gebieden. The Mad Revisionist gaat door waar Holocaust-ontkenners zijn opgehouden en ontkent vrolijk de maan.

Als de maan nep is, hadden ze hem dan niet in leuke kleurtjes kunnen maken in plaats van saai grijs?

You can see it. But think about it – without the help of so-called “experts”, how do you really know what you’re looking at? It could be a hologram, projected from various government installations throughout the world. It could be a large, crudely painted balloon, held in place by helium and propelled by tiny sails and rudders (which is why it moves across the sky so slowly).

They ingeniously concocted the idea of “cycles of the moon”, and as their resources increased, were able to create the illusion that this object in the sky actually went through such changes. To make their hoax more plausible to early, superstitious societies, they arranged for these cycles to coincide with the months of the year.

But don’t all qualified scientists and astronomers agree that there is a moon? Indeed, but shouldn’t one be suspicious of such unanimity, when universities are supposed to be forums for open debate of controversial issues. (…) You will never see the revisionist perspective on the moon being taught in institutions of higher learning, even as a controversial opposing view. (…)  Could you imagine a student who argued the revisionist viewpoint on the question of the moon being awarded a degree? He would be hounded out of the university in an instant! How can one explain such behavior from institutions that are supposed to serve as forums for the free exchange of ideas, except to conclude that the establishment has something to hide?

But don’t the astronauts who claim to have walked on the moon count as eyewitnesses? And just how much money did each of these men receive, on record, for their services? And this doesn’t count the unaccounted millions that have probably bought their continued silence since.

And what about the “moon rocks” that these astronauts brought back with them? I’m sure their backyard gardens are just that much poorer. It will take more than a few phony space artifacts to prove the existence of a 74,000,000,000,000,000,000 ton object orbiting the earth.

Hasn’t the moon been mentioned in texts and literature throughout history? There is no mention of the moon in the English language prior to the year 1066. This is a proven fact, so rarely spoken of in these controlled academic institutions.

En zo gaat het nog wel even door.

Het moge duidelijk zijn dat The Mad Revisionist een humoristische site is. Maar de manier van argumenteren zal voor velen herkenbaar zijn. Het is de manier van veel complottheoretici.

Wanneer iemand met een bewijs voor je neus staat, zeg je dat het gefabriceerd is.

Wanneer een expert een uitspraak doet zeg je dat diegene geld heeft ontvangen om die uitspraak te doen.

Wanneer ‘iedereen’ een bepaalde (andere) mening heeft zeg je dat “zij er allemaal bij horen”.

Op die manier kan een complottheorist altijd in het complot blijven geloven: ontkrachtende bewijzen behoren ook tot het complot.

Waar ligt Atlantis?

Een pareltje uit de begintijd van Kloptdatwel (21 oktober 2010) gaat over een briljante lezing waarin Matt Harding in 5 minuten uitlegt dat een denkbeeldige lijn een hele serie belangrijke monumenten op aarde verbindt – de imaginary line of ancient cosmic weirdness. De Nazca lijnen in Peru zijn verbonden met de grote piramide in Gizeh en op die lijn liggen ook andere mysterieuze plekken zoals Paaseiland en oeroude monumenten waarvan sommige nooit goed verklaard zijn. Zelfs de kaart van Piri Reis die de kustlijn van Zuid Amerika toonde voordat Columbus er ooit was geweest komt in een ander daglicht te staan. De lijn loopt namelijk over een eiland op deze kaart dat nooit is teruggevonden. Is dit soms Atlantis? Of is het historisch complotdenken?

 

Vermoord wegens verkeerd sterrenbeeld

Gisteren was het bericht op o.a. Nu.nl te lezen: Oma doodt kleinzoon om verkeerd sterrenbeeld.

In de Chinese provincie Jiangxi zou een mevrouw Ao haar kleinzoon in een put hebben gegooid omdat een waarzegger had gezegd dat het sterrenbeeld van de baby de familie ongeluk zou brengen.

Ao zou zelfs een andere kleinzoon ertoe hebben aangezet om haar zwangere dochter in de buik te stompen om zodoende een miskraam te veroorzaken. Ao zou de politie hebben verteld dat toen het kind werd geboren in januari, ze besloot om hem te vermoorden. Toen de moeder even naar het toilet ging op 6 april jongstleden nam Ao het kind mee en gooide hem in een put. Zelf verdween Ao vervolgens voor twee dagen voordat ze gearresteerd werd.

En zo werd de voorspelling van de waarzegger een ‘self-fulfilling prophecy‘: door de voorspelling beging Ao een misdaad en riep op die manier inderdaad ongeluk over haar familie af.

[Hier stond een cartoon van Fokke & Sukke die ik toepasselijk vond bij dit artikel. Ik dacht dat de makers ervan gratis verspreiding van hun cartoons om met de producten eromheen dan geld te verdienen als verdienmodel hadden, blijkbaar is dat niet zo. De cartoon is in elk geval nog te vinden op dit blog]

Waarom geloven mensen toch in astrologie, horoscopen en sterrenbeelden? Op de website van stichting Skepsis is daar al veel over geschreven. In dit kader is het wellicht interessant om de uitgewerkte verzie van de lezing die voormalig astroloog Rudolf Smit gaf tijdens het Skepsiscongres van 1990 te lezen: ‘Geloof in astrologie‘.

Hij gaat onder meer in op de vraag ‘waarom mensen het gevoel krijgen dat astrologie werkt’. Hij geeft een beschrijving van de vermeende horoscoop van Jezus Christus en haalt ook een voorspelling aan over onze eigen koningin Beatrix:

‘Velen stellen zich de vraag of prinses Beatrix in de toekomst de troon zal bestijgen. Hoewel de constellatie in het teken Aquarius zeer zeker op de mogelijkheid van een troonsbestijging wijst, zijn wij ervan overtuigd dat dit niet het geval zal zijn.’ Iets verderop wordt dit herhaald. ‘… waardoor tevens de neiging versterkt wordt haar eigen weg te gaan zal ze later van een troonsbestijging afzien.’ Iets verderop ‘… dan komt dit daarmede zoveel overeen dat Mercurius als heerser van het derde huis in het teken Gemini in het Zenith staat waardoor een broer een zeer belangrijke invloed op haar leven zal krijgen en de troon zal bestijgen.’ Ten slotte: ‘prinses Beatrix ontwikkelt zich later als schrijfster en te verwachten is dat de prinses in haar literaire bekwaamheden een groot levensdoel zal vinden.’

Hij zegt daarover:

Van die voorspellingen is niet veel uitgekomen. Dit is met bijna alle astrologische voorspellingen die in het openbaar worden gedaan het geval.
